Nacionalista Party candidates are now looking forward to having Manny Pacquiao join them in their campaign sorties after the ace Filipino boxer won against Ghanian boxer Joshua Clottey, eventually retaining his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title.

Pacquiao had earlier vowed to join Sen. Manny Villar’s camp which has already barnstormed several vote-rich provinces in the last five weeks.

Villar earlier intimated that Pacquiao would be his ace in the campaign trail, to be pitted against his rival Liberal Party presidential bet Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s celebrity sister Kris Aquino.

Pacquiao is also running for a congressional seat in Saranggani’s lone district under the Nacionalista Party.

Villar, in a statement, lauded the victory of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao as proof that perseverance can overcome any obstacle.

“Congratulations to the world’s greatest boxer,” Villar said.

“Ang karangalang paulit-ulit nang ibinigay sa ating bansa ni Manny Pacquiao ay patunay lamang na walang balakid kailanman ang maaaring humadlang sa taong masidhing nagpupunyagi, isang taong may sipag at tiyaga (The honor he gives to the country is proof that there is no hindrance to any person who knows hard work and perseverance),” he added.

“Isang halimbawa si Manny na kaya nating talunin ang kahirapan, na magaling ang Pilipino, at karapat-dapat lamang na kilalanin ng buong mundo. Mabuhay ka, Manny! (Manny is a living example that we can overcome poverty, that the Filipino is good and is worthy of world recognition. Long live, Manny!)” Villar said.

Also in a statement, Sen. Loren Legarda, Villar’s running mate congratulated Pacquiao for exemplifying the true Filipino’s determination to win against all odds.

“Manny (Pacquiao) has once again made us proud. More importantly, he has shown us what good old-fashioned hard work and determination can achieve,” Legarda said.

"I'm very happy for him. He makes me proud to be Pinoy, and even prouder that he is with us in the campaign,” she said.

“He has been an inspiration not only to his fellow athletes but to all of us Filipinos. He is living proof that all the disadvantages we are given in life need not be obstacles to success. May we all strive to be like him and do the best we can whatever our line of work,” added Legarda.

NP spokesman and senatorial bet Adel Tamano also commended the world boxing champ, saying Pacquiao has exemplified “heroism, resiliency, love of country, sheer talent and dedication.”

“His victory against Joshua Clottey is proof that amid problems besetting our country, here’s someone who epitomizes grit against all odds,” Tamano said.

“Manny Pacquiao is a son of Mindanao and as a fellow Mindanaoan, I am truly proud to see that Mindanaoans excel in the field of boxing. Manny is Mindanao’s greatest athlete, the Philippines’ pride and definitely among the world’s finest,” he further said.

“I’m also doubly proud because Manny happens to be a proud supporter not only of Nacionalista Party standard bearer Manny Villar but of the entire NP slate as well. I’m proud that he’s a part of the NP family,” he said.
