The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has declared the Liberal Party (LP) as the dominant minority party in the May polls.

The poll body also declared the Lakas-Kampi-CMD as the dominant majority party.

Based on the resolution, both the dominant majority and dominant minority parties will get the much coveted copies of the election returns (ERs) as soon as they are available on election day.

The Nacionalista-Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) was earlier in the running for the dominant minority status after a merger of the two parties was recognized by the Comelec.

The Liberals earlier questioned the merger, saying that the coalition was only a ploy to meet the Comelec’s requirement that the dominant minority party field the most number of candidates in the national and local elections.

Based on Comelec records, the LP will be fielding 5,934 candidates while NP is set to field 5,565, NPC has 2,373.

The same resolution also named accredited major political parties as the Nacionalista Party (NP), Bangon Pilipinas Movement, Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), and PDP-LABAN, which will authorize the groups to deploy poll watchers in various precincts and canvassing centers nationwide.

Aside from the LP and the NP-NPC Coalition, the Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) also sought accreditation for dominant minority status.
