Party list groups’ coalition drops accreditation bid

BAYAN Muna party list Rep. Satur Ocampo yesterday said they are foregoing the accreditation of the Makabayang Koalisyon ng Mamamayan (Makabayan) as a political party of seven progressive party list groups in order to preserve their individual organizations.

Ocampo, Makabayan president, said he has been advised by the Commission on Elections Second Division that if their petition for accreditation is granted, the party list groups the members belong to will be dissolved.

"Lugi naman kami doon. Mawawala ang seven parties. Napagkasunduan na namin na mag-withdraw."

Makabayan sought accreditation as a political coalition last August, spurred by the plans of Ocampo, Gabriela party list Rep. Liza Maza and Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casiño to run for senator in the May 2010 polls.

Aside from Bayan Muna and Gabriela, the other members of the coalition are other party list groups AnakPawis, Kabataan, ACT Teachers, Courage, and Migrante International.

Election Commissioner Lucenito Tagle said the coalition members cannot be allowed to register as a single political party without sacrificing their party list accreditation.

Ocampo said their withdrawal of the petition for accreditation does not affect their senatorial plans. He said they will continue to negotiate with the United Opposition for possible inclusion as guest candidates.

Makabayan will hold a general convention of their member-organizations on Nov. 13 after each group had conducted their individual assemblies. – Gerard M. Naval
