Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. is mulling on leading his faction in the Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party into forging an alliance with any of the opposition's three presidential aspirants.

Interviewed by reporters, De Venecia said they may coalesce with either Sen. Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III of the Liberal Party or Sen. Manuel “Manny" Villar Jr. of the Nacionalista Party.

The Pangasinan representative also said they may also ally themselves with Senator Francis “Chiz" Escudero of the Nationalist People’s Coalition should he decide to run for president in next year’s elections.

"You have a clear choice between Manny Villar and Noynoy Aquino. And from the standpoint of competence, Chiz Escudero is also competent," De Venecia said.

De Venecia said his group would not endorse Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., the expected standard-bearer of the administration, despite his personal ties with him.

De Venecia, who heads a selection committee composed of so-called "Lakas originals," maintained that the merger of administration parties Lakas-CMD and Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) was illegal.

He said he would not stop until the Commission on Elections or the Supreme Court nullifies the merger.

"This battle will last beyond the elections of 2010," De Venecia said.

The Comelec had already accredited Lakas-Kampi-CMD as a national party.

De Venecia was leader of the House of Representatives for five terms until he had a falling-out with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo over the allegations of his son, businessman Jose “Joey" de Venecia III, that First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo had a hand in the allegedly anomalous ZTE-NBN broadband deal.

Since then, De Venecia has been a vocal critic of the Arroyo administration. He even testified for the pro-impeachment panel during the hearings on the last impeachment complaint against the President. - GMANews.TV
