Former presidential peace adviser Avelino Razon will be the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) bet for the Manila mayoralty race in 2010, the party spokesman said Wednesday.
In a statement, NPC spokesman and Valenzuela Rep. Rex Gatchalian said Razon, who recently quit his post as Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, has taken his oath as the newest NPC member.
"We welcome with open arms former police Director General Avelino Razon to the NPC fold even as we know that he brings with him the conviction to really serve and improve the lives of the people especially in Manila," Gatchalian said.
Razon, who assumed the peace post from Secretary Hermogenes Esperon Jr. on January 29, recently resigned to pursue his mayoralty bid. He was deputy director general of the National Security Council prior to his appointment as peace adviser. [See: Razon resigns as OPAPP chief prepares for Manila mayoral bid].
Gatchalian said Razon is a good addition to the party given "his long years in the government service."
Razon is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1974. Before assuming his post as PNP chief in September 2007, he was the deputy police chief for administration.
Razon, who was also deputy chief of the Presidential Security Group during the term of former President Fidel Ramos, retired in September 2008 upon reaching the mandatory military and police retirement age of 56.
Razon also served twice as chief of the Western Police District (now the Manila Police District), first from May 1996 to August 1998 and then again from December 1999 to March 2001.
Gatchalian said the NPC expects more politicians to jump to the party, which is set to announce in the coming weeks whether it has chosen Senator Francis Escudero or Senator Loren Legarda as its standard bearer.
