TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Philippines -- Actor Cesar Montano was sworn in as chairman of the revived Liberal Party-Bohol, on Saturday, in the presence of Senators Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Manuel "Mar" Roxas II.
Presidential aspirant Aquino and his vice presidential bet, Roxas, were welcomed by supporters here Saturday afternoon, during the mass oath-taking of new members of the LP-Bohol at the JJ's Seafood Village, this city.
Montano has declared his bid for Bohol governor in the 2010 elections.
The jampacked crowd was a festive gathering of old party faithful and zealous recruits who underwent an orientation seminar on liberal democracy earlier in the morning.
Roxas, the LP president, administered the oath together with Aquino, Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel and former Bukidnon Rep. Neric Acosta, who are both groomed to be included in the LP senatorial line-up.
"I could have just lived a life in ease to enjoy the fruits of my labor but I cannot, in conscience, face squarely our Creator later if I could have given more for Bohol and had not done it," said Montano during his acceptance speech.
Montano has portrayed Jose Rizal, and has gained acclaim as an actor in movies such as Muro Ami, Bagong Buwan, Panaghoy sa Suba and The Great Raid.
He is also known here in the province as an advocate for children development, education, tourism, environment and culture and arts.
Montano's wife, actress Sunshine Cruz, also graced the affair with Quezon province governor, Raffy Nantes.
Aquino gave a solidarity message and reiterated his platform of government anchored on good governance, transparency, fighting graft and corruption, sound and sustainable development and commitment to the poor.
"Corruption is the single biggest threat to our democracy. It deprives the poor of the social services they badly need. It destroys the moral fiber of our society," said Aquino.
The Aquino-Roxas duo is buoyed by the latest survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) on likely presidential and vice-presidential tandems which put them ahead of the pack at 57 percent.
A far second is a probable Sen. Manuel Villar-Vice President Noli de Castro team-up with 19 percent. The tandems of Senators Chiz Escudero-Loren Legarda and of former President Joseph Estrada-Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay are tied for third and fourth at 9 percent.
Saturday's visit to Bohol was the second in two days for Aquino.
On Thursday, the presidential hopeful conducted a "listening tour" to gather the various issues and concerns of the different sectors in Bohol.
Roxas failed to make it to Bohol then due to flu.
The MOVE-Noynoy (Movement of Volunteers to Elect Noynoy) has been working with the Aquino-Roxas campaign group and the Change Politics Movement (CPM).
The townhall dialogue also held at the JJ's Seafood Village presented the people's agenda before Aquino, who articulated his position on the different issues and concerns raised, together with LP campaign manager, Florencio "Butch" Abad and Acosta.
Aquino, likewise, met with local business leaders at the Metrocentre Hotel spearheaded by the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The presidential aspirant also barnstormed the campuses of the various colleges and universities in the city and staged hallway chats with students.
A symposium with the youth was also conducted at the Holy Name University gymnasium, which coincided with the launching of the Kabataang Bol-anon alang sa Kausaban ug Kauswagan - a local youth movement, which supports the Aquino-Roxas candidacy.
