THE United Opposition (UNO) tandem of former President Joseph Estrada and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay will be unfurled tomorrow at Plaza Amado Hernandez in Tondo, Manila.
The choice of Tondo, one of Manila’s poorest districts, was to show that UNO is non-elitist, compared to other parties which paraded their 2010 aspirants in venues as the Manila Hotel (Lakas-Kampi) and Club Filipino (Liberal Party), said UNO.
Estrada is expected to declare in Tondo his second presidential bid with Binay as running-mate and introduce eight of the 11 UNO senatorial aspirants led by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada.
UNO is a coalition of Estrada’s Pwersa and Masang Pilipino (PMP) and Binay’s Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban).
UNO said its "Tapat sa Mahirap, Samahang Tunay" slogan reflects its platform of anti-poverty, food security, anti-corruption, peace and order and environmental sustainability programs.
Opposition leaders and their regional delegations, at least 17 incumbent Manila councilors, youth and senior citizens’ groups are expected at 4 p.m. kick-off event. A musical extravaganza will feature singers Dulce and Rico J. Puno and the Makati Choir.
UNO said delegations "by the thousands" are expected from Makati, San Juan, Navotas, Quezon City and Bulacan and the Estrada support groups such as MARE, JEEP, EDSA 3 coalition and Agilang Pilipino.
Sen. Loren Legarda yesterday said she will stay with the political opposition when she runs for a higher post next year, clarifying her position amid talks that Sen. Manuel Villar of Nacionalista Party and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro of the administration Lakas-Kampi are both eyeing her for the vice presidential slot.
Legarda said she will remain with the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) of tycoon Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco Jr.
"I’m running for a higher post, in my political party" said the lady solon without confirming reports that she has already been picked as running-mate of Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero, the likely NPC standard bearer. Legarda said she would formally announce her political plan this week, separate from Escudero who is also expected shortly to make an announcement. – JP Lopez
