MANILA, Philippines--Administration party officials concede that a team-up between Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Sen. Loren Legarda in the 2010 presidential elections would make a “potent combination.''

“That's a very good combination. Gibo from Luzon, and Loren representing the Visayas,'' Prospero Pichay, Lakas Kampi CMD vice president for membership, said in a phone interview.

If it materializes, the Teodoro-Legarda team-up would bring together their respective supporters from governors down to councilors from their respective parties to form a “stronger political organization,'' the former lawmaker said.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde agreed: “I understand some governors have been pushing the Gibo-Loren tandem and I am sure that is going to be an exciting tandem if it pushes through.''

The executive committee of the League of Provinces of the Philippines last Friday endorsed the ticket of Teodoro and Legarda for 2010 after conducting a straw vote at the Linden Suites in Pasig City.

The Lakas Kampi CMD has endorsed Teodoro as its standard-bearer. Legarda of the Nationalist People's Coalition, on the other hand, was still weighing her options.

She has disclosed that her partymate, Sen. Francis Escudero, Teodoro and Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. of the Nacionalista Party had been wooing her to be their running mate.

While it has not been formally discussed, the team-up of Teodoro and Legarda would be “very much welcome and acceptable'' to members of the administration coalition, said Lakas Kampi CMD secretary-general Gabriel Claudio.

“With their respective expertise and advocacies, Gibo and Loren will complement each other very well and as a team can address issues of the most urgent relevance to Filipinos,'' he said in a text message. ``Like Gibo, Senator Loren is well-liked among Lakas Kampi members.''

The team-up would pose no problem to the coalition because the slot for the vice presidential candidate is still open, Pichay said.

After naming Teodoro as its presidential candidate, the coalition urged Local Government
Secretary Ronaldo Puno to seek its nomination as its vice presidential candidate.

It is now up to the NPC to decide whether to coalesce with the administration party for the 2010 elections, and put up Legarda as the vice presidential candidate, Pichay said.

“If the NPC coalesces with us, then it will be OK with us,'' he said when asked if the coalition was open to a Teodoro-Legarda tandem.
