Erap, Bong advised on premature campaigning

BY GERARD NAVAL

NEWLY-APPOINTED Elections Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal yesterday advised movie stars intending to run in May and who have entries for the Manila film festival in December to seek a clarification from Comelec on whether they would be committing premature campaigning.

The official campaign period starts in February.

Larrazabal’s statement was in response to the letter of Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. regarding his entry "Ang Panday." Revilla will be seeking reelection next year.

According to Larrazabal, the Comelec Law Department had told Revilla that the public showing of his movie might or might not constitute premature campaigning.

Larrazabal said former president Joseph Estrada also faces the same predicament.

Estrada and comedian Ai Ai delas Alas also have a film fest entry titled "Ang Tanging Pamilya."

Larrazabal said anything remains possible as long as the Supreme Court has not issued a final decision on the case of Sta. Monica, Surigao del Norte Mayor Rosalinda Peñera.

"There’s a motion for reconsideration and we are just waiting for the SC. I believe once the SC issues its decision, we will be properly guided as to what constitutes premature campaigning," he said.

The High Court, in an 8-7 vote last month, disqualified Peñera after it was found that she committed premature campaigning when she held a motorcade to mark the filing of her certificate of candidacy for the 2007 midterm elections.
