MANILA, Philippines – Senator Loren Legarda announced Monday that she would be running for higher office in 2010 under her own party, the Nationalist People's Coalition.
Legarda issued the statement amid speculations that she would run in 2010 as vice president of administration's bet, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.
"I'm running for higher office, in my political party, with the opposition," Legarda said at a regular forum at the Manila Hotel.
Pressed if she would never run with Teodoro, Legarda said, "Never say never" but quick to say that she would stay with the opposition.
"Malay mo [Teodoro] lumipat siya sa opposition [How do you know, maybe he will transfer to the opposition]?" she said in jest.
The senator hinted that her discussion with partymate, Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero was almost a done deal.
"Halos malinaw na ang pag- uusap at wala namang problema [Our talk is almost done and there isn’t any problem]," she said but refused to say who the NPC's standard-bearer and running mate next year would be.
Legarda reiterated that at this point, it did not matter anymore "who's number one and two" so long as they agreed on the platform and the way to run the campaign.
She said she would make her political plans in 2010 known by the end of the week.
