Senator Francis Escudero has doused speculation that he may drop out from the presidential race, by saying he will announce his political plan before the Dec. 1 deadline for the filing of certificate of candidacy.
“I will not make a decision by default. Before Dec. 1, I will announce my decision regarding the role that I will play and freely do in the 2010 elections,” Escudero told newsmen.
His campaign strategists earlier disclosed that the political neophyte from Sorsogon plans to run as an independent candidate for president after bolting the Nationalist People’s Coalition.
When asked who will be his running mate in case he goes ahead with his presidential bid, Escudero was also evasive. “Let’s wait for the right time.”
A media adviser in the Escudero camp admitted that his chances of winning are bleak if he runs as an independent or without the backing of a major political party. He said he would not be surprised if Escudero would drop from the presidential race since his senatorial term was still good up to 2013.
A political watcher observed that Escudero’s political ads have continued to be shown on television even after he resigned from his party. He said the ads should have been pulled out if he was inclined to withdraw from the race.
