Admitting that they could not match the money that their opponents are spending in their infomercials, the Liberal Party led by its standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III promised to just match it with effort.
“Hindi natin kaya sabayan yung bilyon-bilyon na nakalaan para gastusin sa infomercials baka sabayan namin sila sa sipag o hihigitan pa natin,” Sen. Aquino told reporters after filing his certificate of candidacy (CoC) at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) main office in Manila Saturday.
Aquino said they won’t need to spend as much money since most of the people that are helping them are volunteers.
“Alam naman ninyo na ang nagtutulak ng kampanya natin ay yung people’s campaign and sense of volunteerism. Kapag volunteer ka hindi nababayaran yun so nakakabawas sa gastusin yun,” said the yellow clad Aquino.
Sen. Aquino, however, is confident that they have sufficient fund to run a decent campaign.
“Palagay ko naman meron kami supisyente na pondo para maisulong ng maayos itong kampanya po natin lalo na dun sa kampanya mismo at pati yung pagbabantay ng ating boto,” he said.
His running mate Sen. Mar Roxas, for his part, is convinced that the track record of Sen. Noynoy and not money is what is more important.
Seven of LP’s senatorial candidates also filed their CoCs Saturday. They are congressmen Ruffy Biazon and Teofisto Guingona III; former congressman Nereus Acosta; former National Economic Development Administration director general Ralph Recto, who was accompanied by his son, Ryan Christian; Akbayan Rep. Riza Hontiveros; lawyer Alex Lacson who was represented by his wife; and Sonia Roco, wife of the late Sen. Raul Roco.
Detained Army Gen. Danilo Lim, of the Magdalo Group, already filed his CoC last Friday while former Sen. Franklin Drilon has not yet formalized his candidacy.
Aquino, however, did not reveal yet who are the other senators in their lineup, saying they are still in the process of negotiating with certain people.
“Meron pa po last minute negotiations and of course nakaiwan ang isang slot for Serge (Osmeña),” he said.
It was recalled that former Sen. Serge Osmeña bolted the Liberal Party after Recto joined the party.
Others who filed their CoCs are Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who is seeking a Senate seat under the Nacionalista Party (NP) of Senator Manny Villar; House Speaker Prospero Nograles, who bids to challenge incumbent Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte; Movie and television personality Lani Mercado-Revilla, who will seek a House seat in the newly reconstituted Bacoor congressional district; Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, and his vice mayoral candidate Eric Martinez of the Liberal Party (LP); Caloocan City Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri and his running mate, former District 2 Rep. Egay Erice. (With reports from Gabriel S. Mabutas, Edmer Panesa, Anthony Giron, and Willie L. Catapat)
