‘I’m not in a hurry’ - Villar

Sen. Manuel Villar last night said he would wait for political alignments to settle down before he selects any local candidates.

Villar said he was not in a hurry.

“Its hard to say (for now). You will know your allies, your final allies, by Nov. 30,” said Villar who visited the Cebu Daily News newsroom shortly after planing in from Manila.

The former senate president is scheduled to meet some political figures before he leaves for Manila later today.

He declined to discuss details .

“I want to court everybody. But of course you want to talk with iyong pinaka malakas. Kilala ko naman silang lahat,” he said.

Villar said it was difficult to say at this stage who were his allies in Cebu or who he would support because “the situation is very fluid.”

“It's still too early to say that. Sa Cebu kasi complicated ang local politics,” he told CDN.

“The mere fact that you cannot tell me for example who are the protagonists, who will be pitted against (one another) by Nov. 30 is indicative already that it’s complicated . In other areas tapos na. Defined na,” he explained, referring to alignments of local aspirants.

When alignments are clearer “position ka na lang”, Villar added.

The selection process, however, would be dependent on who would want to side with him and the Nacionalista Party (NP).

“Kapag wala namang pumili sa iyo then you will have to form your own,” Villar said.

NP is now the second largest political party in the country, according to the senator.

Asked who were the Cebuano members or potential canddiates for a local slate, he declined to say.

“More or less I have an idea of who they are but I just don't want to preempt it because some of them are still in negotiations and I don't want to be unfair to them,” he said.

He said Rep. Eduardo Gullas of the Cebu’s 1st district was a “good friend”’ but Gullas is allied with President Arroyo’s Kampi.

Former Mandaue City mayor Thadeo Ouano stated in an earlier interview that he may run for mayor or 6th district congressman under Villar's NP.

“In many areas in the country, linya na. Matagal na. They already know who will run for what. Sa Cebu wala pa. Very fluid pa ang situation.

But Villlar is in no hurry.

“The decision on who to run with can be done in a matter of hours so there is no rush,” he said.

He sounded just as patient with the selection process and speculation over who his vice presidential candidate would be.

“Even sa VP, you have to wait until nag decide na lahat on whether they will run for president or not and then you will know who is available for VP,” he said. Reporter Doris C. Bongcac
