It’s possible NPC won’t have presidential bet

MANILA, Philippines—The Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) could be heading into the May 2010 elections without a standard-bearer and with members free to back whomever they want from other parties.

That is if the proposal made by NPC member, former Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, is adopted either by the party’s executive committee or national membership next week.

Sotto has proposed that the NPC presidential nomination be left vacant with party members free to support any other presidential candidate. The members, however, must support every NPC candidate running for other positions—from vice president to the last councilor.

Sotto formally made the proposal to NPC chair emeritus Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, who received it Thursday, as part of ongoing efforts to chart a party course in the wake of the departure of its presumptive presidential candidate, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

“The presidency will be a free zone,” Sotto told the Inquirer.

“This proposal is intended mainly to preserve party unity,” Sotto, chair of the Dangerous Drugs Board, added. “It’s the old NPC way and it’s truly democratic.”

The NPC suddenly found itself without a presidential candidate after Escudero left the party that had been grooming him to be its candidate more than a week ago purportedly over a lack of financial backing.

NPC vice presidential candidate Sen. Loren Legarda was left to consider the suit of the presidential candidates of other parties, among them, the administration’s Lakas-Kampi-CMD and the Nacionalista Party of Sen. Manny Villar. Christian V. Esguerra
