The world’s greatest boxer, Manny Pacquiao, is free to join the administration party in case he decides to throw his hat in the political ring next year, a senior party official said Thursday.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Pacquiao, who recently defeated Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada, is an “asset” in wherever field he intends to venture next.

“Definitely he is welcome (to join the administration party) if he will run,” Ermita told reporters at the sidelines of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD party convention at the Philippine International Convention Center.

“He is an asset if he will run in whatever position. If he will run for senator, he may be disqualified since he is still young,” said Ermita, who was named chairman of the national advisory council of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD party.

Regardless of his political plans, Ermita said Pacquiao will be given a hero’s welcome Friday in Malacañang when he returns from the United States. He said President Arroyo will welcome Pacquiao, who made history with his seven world boxing titles, at the Palace. A presentation of a special cake and a short program will also follow.

President Arroyo earlier congratulated Pacquiao for his latest boxing victory, saying he has showed Filipino grit and determination in the face of all odds. Mrs. Arroyo was unable to watch the game since she was attending a meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders in Singapore.
