Revilla finds VP offer tempting

...

The search for a running-mate for Lakas-Kampi standard bearer Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro may have come to an end as Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. says he is reconsidering the offer to take on that role.

Revilla disclosed that emissaries from Teodoro and Lakas-Kampi have been trying to persuade him to team up with the Defense chief.

“I cannot say no. But I told them to give me a little time to study the matter,” he told newsmen before the start of the Senate session.

Revilla, a movie actor, had already decided not to vie for the vice presidency after Lakas-Kampi leaders broached the idea to him. He was dissuaded by his father, former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr., from aspiring to a higher post.

“I’ve said before, I am ready to fight, but I was advised by my father not to pursue such a plan,” he said.

Revilla, who just arrived from the United States, said he has not yet talked with his father about the renewed offer from Lakas-Kampi bigwigs.

But now, he said: “I will decide for myself.”

Revilla, 43, said he is thankful to his partymates for the offer but added he would weigh thoroughly the pros and cons of it.

He also said he is still waiting for a “heavenly sign” to make sure that he will not err in his decision.

His wife, Lani Mercado, a semi-retired film actress, was reported to have said there is “no way” Revilla will run for vice president.

Because of his high ratings in the senatorial survey, Revilla has admitted that his first inclination is to seek reelection. But he also admitted that he is more comfortable performing the role of executive, than performing legislative duties.

The Lakas’ vice-presidential slot had been offered to Senator Loren Legarda, Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. But all of them declined. Fel V. Maragay
