Bro. Eddie Villanueva, presidential candidate of Bangon Pilipinas Party, said that sending migrant workers must not be a long-term government policy.

“We also need our people here to strengthen our own domestic economy. We see that our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) excel in whatever field they engage with abroad, whether in the professional or technical spheres. The Philippines needs their skills and excellence,’’ Bro. Eddie said after a visit to the OFW communities in Hong Kong at the start of the New Year.

Hong Kong remains one of the top five OFW destinations and is now home to around 200,000 OFWs in the professional and technical sectors alone.

“We have established very close relations with the OFWs in Hong Kong for almost 25 years now,’’ said Bro. Eddie. “In fact, the Jesus is Lord (JIL) Church has a 20-year Shelter which was established to help abused OFWs and those who have pending legal cases with their employers,’’ he said.

The JIL Shelter provides legal assistance, counselling, and free boarding for the OFWs they shelter. At any given time, the Shelter can house 50 persons needing help. In 2005, the JIL Shelter was also instrumental in rescuing a Filipina who was sold to white slavery. The rescue became controversial because it was the first time that an actual rescue was conducted despite the longstanding open white slavery cases involving Filipinas in Hong Kong.
