BATANGAS CITY—Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto and other provincial and local officials took their oaths as members of the Liberal Party (LP) at the capitol compound on Tuesday.

Presidential aspirant Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III led the formal oath-taking ceremonies.

The list of guests in the ceremonies were a virtual who’s who in Batangas and Philippine politics.

They included Vice Gov. Marc Leviste, who is seeking reelection; Ralph Recto, Riza Hontiveros, Ruffy Biazon, Franklin Drilon and TG Guingona who are aspiring for senatorial seats, and 300 others running for congressional, mayoral and vice mayoral posts.

Supporters, led by Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Batangas 2nd District Rep. Hermilando Mandanas and celebrities Sharon Cuneta and Kris Aquino were also present.

A crowd of about 15,000 watched the oath-taking ceremonies.

Many were seen holding and waving yellow flags while cheering for show biz personalities Kris and Sharon.

Santos-Recto said in her speech that she declined offers for her to run for vice president because she wanted to focus on Batangas and continue her projects and programs in the province.

Ralph, whose entry into the LP drove former senator Serge Osmeña out of the party, said he and Vilma’s decision to join LP came after a series of consultations with province mates.

Osmeña bolted LP and the party’s senatorial ticket to protest the entry of the Recto couple. Marrah Erika Lesaba, Inquirer Southern Luzon
