Gibo still searching for a partner

MANILA - With a week to go before its national convention, the Lakas-Kampi-CMD is seeing an opportunity to choose from among the best possible vice-presidential bets.

Lakas-Kampi-CMD deputy secretary-general Rey Roquero confirmed on ANC's Top Story on Wednesday that among the candidates are Senators Bong Revilla and Loren Legarda, former Optical Media Board Chairman Edu Manzano, and even members of the Nationalist People's Coalition.

"There are still talks ongoing and I think hindi pa sarado. Very insistent ang kasamahan, lalo na ibang governors sa NPC at mga congressmen. Lumalabas ngayon na maraming pagpipilian pero we have to really pick the best among these. (The nominations are not yet closed. Many are very insistent, especially governors from the NPC and the congressmen. It's turning out we have a lot to choose from.)," Roquero said.

Revilla had already declined the VP post, saying he will seek reelection as senator.

Roquero concedes Revilla would have a lot more to lose if he runs as Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro's running mate and fails to win.

"Tapos na yung kanyang 6 years. Malaking bagay ang mawawala sa kanya at yun ay isang kandidato as VP, samantalang sa pagka-senador ay mananalo agad. (His 6-year term has ended. He has a lot more to lose as a VP candidate. As a reelectionist senator, he is assured of victory.)," Roquero said of Revilla.

Roquero also said they have not closed their doors to a possible Teodoro-Legarda tandem.

"Ito ang mga natural allies na gusto ituloy ang coalition ng Lakas-Kampi at NPC. If that happens, magiging natural na papasok si Sen. Loren Legarda. She may be the partner of Gibo if there is a coalition between the 2 parties which we used to have in the past. (We are natural allies. If the Lakas-Kampi and NPC merges, Sen. Loren Legarda will naturally come in.)" Roquero explained.

Manzano, meanwhile, told ABS-CBN News that he is also being courted by the Liberal Party and the United Opposition as a senatorial candidate.

He confirmed that he's leaning more towards a senatorial run than the vice-presidency.

While the ruling coalition has yet to announce its complete lineup, and even Teodoro's running mate, Roquero said all these will be known when it holds its national convention on Nov. 19.
