There’s no business like show business in politics.
Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos believes that former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada can win the May 2010 elections not only by relying on the support of the poor and the masses but also with the support of his friends in show business and in the film industry.
Marcos pointed out that despite Estrada’s strong mass-based support, “showbiz personalities” could further boost his candidacy against other presidential candidates.
“Erap should start securing the support of his showbiz friends,” Marcos said.
Marcos is among the senatorial line up of the Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino-United Opposition coalition as a guest candidate.
Marcos also yesterday confirmed that he will be running as a senatorial bet of Estrada.
Estrada should match or even outdo the support being extended by actress Kris Aquino to her brother, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, if he really wants to return to Malacañang, Marcos said.
He said it is time for Estrada, a former movie actor, to mobilize his friends in the show business and ensure their support for his candidacy just as Kris Aquino has been doing for Noynoy.
An Aquino ad that was aired at the ABS-CBN TV network showed various movie stars carrying a torch and passing this on to Noynoy Aquino, with the message of Ituloy and laban ni Ninoy at Cory (carry on the fight of Cory and Ninoy).
ABS-CBN,which is seen as being partisan and openly favoring the candidacy of Aquino, has also been airing an infomercial called Ako ang simula which has a running theme of Pagbabago, or change, which is the same theme Aquino and the Liberal Party camp have adopted.
In 2001 and 2004, President Arroyo also had a number of showbiz personalities rooting for her senatorial bets as well as her own presidential candidacy.
The opposition congressman acknowledged the tremendous help showbiz celebrities can give to a particular candidate, especially during the campaign where they have been proven to be crowd-drawers.
Well aware of the major role the media play in Philippine elections, Marcos said Estrada should also begin talking to his friends in the entertainment press.
“I think Erap also needs to seek the help of showbiz writers. The combined support of the artists and entertainment media can be a great help to his reelection bid,” he stressed.
Marcos said he believes that Estrada continues to have a significant influence on the entertainment industry and there is no doubt that a lot of showbiz personalities are still willing to support his candidacy.
