Supporters of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero lauded Sunday his decision to resign from the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), saying his move was unprecedented in terms of pushing for genuine reform in the country’s political system.
“This just proved that the senator has the guts to stand on his own two feet, regardless of what it takes to show that he’s for real and stood his ground on what he speaks of showing an example to follow,” Resny Anga, a leader of the Kay Chiz Kami (KCK) Movement based in Kidapawan, North Cotabato said in a telephone interview.
KCK movement is organized by student leaders from the different regions to convince the 40-year-old senator to join the presidential race. The KCK in North Cotabato alone has some 2,000 members, mostly college student, Anga added.
Anga said their group is not losing hope that Escudero will still pursue his presidential bid despite the absence of a political machinery following his resignation from the NPC that is backed by influential businessman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., also party chairman emeritus.
Mariden Jose, a 39-year-old political coordinator based in Ilocos Region, said that she was very impressed on the courage shown by Chiz in foregoing a party machinery in exchange for his freedom to solely decide on his political fate. “Ang tapang niya! (He is so courageous),” Mariden said.
Chiz's announcement over his decision to bolt from the NPC last Wednesday came two days after the group of Mariden presented to him a document bearing at least one million signatures from Ilocanos who are pushing him to run for the presidential race next year. “This is the start of the new politics in the country,” Mariden added.
While the former NPC spokesman said that he has yet to decide to run for the presidency next year following his resignation, Mariden said that she is optimistic that Chiz will throw his hat in the presidential race.
Another supporter of Chiz’s presidential bid, Beauty Villareal of Western Visayas said that her group immediately contacted each other to re-affirm their support to him.
Villareal also claimed that Escudero has solidified their respect to him when he made his decision to resign from NPC that could ignite a major change in the country’s political process.
The 31-year-old community development worker said that there are some 3,500 supporters of Chiz who have not changed their political color despite his resignation from the NPC.
When asked if she ever thought that Chiz's move was a "political suicide," Beauty said that it can only be interpreted as such by people who still adhere to traditional politics which employ guns, goons and gold in ensuring their victory during elections.
Villareal expressed belief that the leadership trait that Escudero he showed when he resigned from the NPC is a perfect tool in reforming the realm of politics in the country in the next six critical years of governance.
"If Senator Chiz did not make such move (to resign from NPC), then our political system will remain the same and our country's problems will stay for as long as traditional politics has not ended," she added.
