Latest Web promos: Gibo’s broadband kits, Villar’s cash

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro has joined the web promotion bandwagon among presidential aspirants.

Like the online contests that Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Bayani Fernando and Senator Manual Villar Jr. launched earlier, Teodoro’s promo is also meant to build a database of possible supporters.

ImageTeodoro, however, makes it easier for visitors to www.gibo.ph (his official website), to win one of the wireless broadband kits he’s giving away. Unlike the promos of other “presidentiables,” visitors don’t need to complete a multi-level game or win a contest of wittiest socio-political comments; they only need to sign up and they are part of Teodoro’s raffle.

Teodoro’s site only requires its visitors to register by leaving their complete name and email address, and referring email addresses of 5 other friends.

More visitors have the chance of winning, too, because the draws are held weekly, as opposed to other sites that gave away gadgets only once. From October 28 to November 29, www.gibo.ph will give away wireless broadband kits every week, although the site doesn’t say how many kits per week.
It’s on Yahoo!

This promo would not entail a big cost for Teodoro’s camp, as recent prices of wireless broadband kits are way lower than the gadgets previously raffled off by other aspirants. Depending on the brand, a broadband kit costs from P885 to P1,895.

In September, Fernando gave away 2 Asus EEE laptops for those who completed the “Be the Chairman” game on his website. In August, Villar awarded 5 Nokia 7100 Supernova mobile phones to entered the best thoughts by completing the sentence, “Akala mo _____, ’yun pala _____,” taking after Villar’s earlier TV and radio advertisement about misconceptions about the senator.

Teodoro’s promotion is being advertised indirectly through the famous internet portal Yahoo! Philippines. It has been bannering since the last week of October the advertisement where Teodoro, who is also chair of the National Disaster Coordinating Council, calls for volunteers to help in rescue and relief missions for victims of recent typhoons.

There are 2 versions of the advertisement: one shows Teodoro on a green background (the color of his campaign) and with the text “Be a Hero. Volunteer here”; the other shows Teodoro on missions to help typhoon victims. Both versions of the advertisement link to Teodoro’s official website.
Business ideas

ImageVillar, however, will not be outdone. He has a new contest on his Akala Mo website, called “BDABOSS” (read as “Be the boss”). Visitors to www.akalamo.com/bdaboss/ are asked to type in the “most original business [ideas].”

Entrepreneurial programs are well-associated with Villar, who was a working student helping his mother sell fresh shrimp in Divisoria, then a struggling entrepreneur, and later a real estate giant with his wife, of the Aguilar clan of Las Piñas.

So far, visitors have shared ideas on selling food, jewelry, and clothes, among others.

The most creative business idea will win P25,000, an amount close to the unit price of the Nokia phones he earlier gave away.

Although some quarters are arguing that such promotions should be considered, and therefore punished, as a form of premature campaign, the National Telecommunications Commission and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) find nothing wrong with them. The agencies say that since none of the politicians have filed their certificates of candidacy, their web promos are considered private activities.

“You can treat [the aspirants] as private citizens, so they can do what they want. It’s merely for free expression,” said Comelec spokesman Mark Jimenez.

Teodoro’s contest ends on November 29, or 2 days before the deadline for filing certificates of candidacy. (Newsbreak)
