MANILA, Philippines—The Muslim group Amanah Coalition has publicly declared its support for Eduardo Villanueva, an evangelist who is a presidential candidate of Bangon Pilipinas.

“What we need in Mindanao and in the entire country is a leader with moral confidence and a strong personal ethics to effect the changes we need as a nation. As Muslims, we are looking for a leader who embodies our moral needs and who can bring us to a stable social and economic future as Filipinos. We believe that only Eddie Villanueva can bring about changes in the conflict-ridden Bangsamoro,” Amanah Coalition said in a statement.

Dr. Zafrullah Alonto, Bangon Pilipinas senatorial candidate who represents Muslim Mindanao in the slate, rallied the Amanah Coalition to publicly declare support to Bro. Eddie.

Amanah Coalition is one of Mindanao’s most influential multi-sectoral groups which has memberships from the Lumadnons in Mindanao, Maguindanao, Sulu and Palawan.

Alonto himself belongs to the Alonto clan who has deep ties with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). He brings with him MILF support to Bangon Pilipinas.

“We came out with a consensus that Bro. Eddie Villanueva, being a man of God, can bring the much-needed moral fiber in our decadent society and government and is the right person who is capable of putting the nation back to its erstwhile but lost reputation and glory which we, the Filipino people, have been proud of in the past,” the coalition said.

Villanueva is running with Perfecto Yasay, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to data from the Commission on Elections, 23.5 percent of the voting population for the 2010 elections is in Mindanao.
