REP. Jovito Palparan (PL-Bantay) yesterday assailed the senatorial bids of Representatives Satur Ocampo (Bayan Muna) and Liza Maza (Gabriela), saying their candidacy is part of the Communist Party of the Philippines’ "obsession of taking over our country’s democratic and free government."

He said Makabayan "is not like any ordinary political party that is supposedly founded on the basic tenets of democracy and real pro-people advocacy."

Makabayan (Makabayang Koalisyon ng Mamamayan) is a coalition of the progressive parties Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Gabriela, Kabataan, Migrante, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Courage and Katribu.

Palparan, tagged by leftists as "The Butcher" for allegedly masterminding the extrajudicial killings of their members, accused his two fellow congressmen of being "Maoist communist terrorists."

He insisted Makabayan "is a creation of the Maoist terrorist CPP-NPA-NDF to push further its obsession of taking over our country’s democratic and free government and replacing the same with communist dictatorship."

"The recent coalition between the mainstream Nacionalista Party and Maoist terrorist front Makabayan party should cause all peace and freedom-loving Filipinos to worry," he said.

Reacting, Ocampo said the media "should not dignify Jovito Palparan’s inane ranting about us progressive party-list representatives being threats to democracy."

"Our record in Congress is clear: We have consistently opposed the GMA government’s anti-democratic steps in the House of Representatives, before the Supreme Court, and in the parliament of the streets," he said.

Ocampo said it is Palparan "who has backed GMA’s power abuses and has been coddled and protected by her."

Maza said: "That’s expected of him (Palparan). He is using us as a platform for his McCarthyist witch-hunting and to cover up his crimes against the people including his role in extrajudicial killings in Mindoro and elsewhere."

Palparan said Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista party should be wary of the "anti-people designs and intentions" of the Makabayan party which is "using the NP as a vehicle to advance its selfish and vested interest and eventually take over the power and control of our country’s governance." – Wendell Vigilia
