MANILA - Two leaders of an alleged plot to overthrow President Arroyo in February 2006 are running in the 2010 senatorial election albeit in separate political parties.
Former Scout Ranger chief Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, a leader of at least two plots to overthrow the Arroyo government, has accepted the offer of former President Estrada to run as senator under the United Opposition.
“I thank former President Joseph Estrada for his faith in my capacity and confidence in my integrity,” said Lim in a statement.
“I will accept this honor as an inspiration for me to further strengthen my resolve to pursue reforms in governance that our people have been yearning for. I look forward to working with him along with the rest of the stalwarts of the opposition towards this end."
The military officer is currently detained at the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame for mutiny and rebellion charges.
Similarly, Marine Col. Ariel Querubin was also seen having lunch Thursday with former Senate President and presidential contender Manny Villar. Earlier reports said Querubin is being courted by Villar, who is the standard bearer of the Nacionalista Party.
Querubin has yet to make clear his political plans although Villar said there is a standing offer to Querubin to join his party's senatorial slate. Querubin is a recipient of the Medal of Valor, the highest military decoration in the Armed Forces for bravery.
"I think he is really good and he could become senator, but right now all we talked about was the effect of the recent storm," Villar said in an interview.
Lim, Querubin and 26 other Army and Marine officers are being tried by a military tribunal for mutiny in connection with the alleged plan to march to EDSA Shrine and subsequently withdraw support from President Arroyo in February 2006.
In November 2007, Lim, Sen. Antonio Trillanes and officers linked to the July 2003 Oakwood mutiny occupied the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City and read a statement, withdrawing support from Arroyo on corruption and illegitimacy issues.
